Mothergunship pc. So the devs are keeping busy with updates and I am busy getting my ♥♥♥ handed to me in this game.I was curious what some of your strategies are out there?1. What starting options do you choose and why?2. What is your governor strategy?3. What is your economy strategy?4.
What is your expansion strategy?5. What is your military strategy?6. What is your research strategy?7. How do you deal with the domino effect hater AI (one hates you, then the rest follow suit)? Here I'll start.:)1. I've tried expedition ship start, failed miserably. Single colony start, failed miserably.but quite as-bad-as colony ship start. Small empire start, decent start, now failing.
It was suggested somewhere else that right now with the current balance and bugs (even in the current public test beta) to start with a well developed system.that I have not done yet. Nor do I see how to modify a starting system aside from choosing medium sized or advanced empires.because the Military, Economic, Technological Development slider menu's and the Starting Colonies slider are all greyed out at the moment.I usually prefer to start a game with total default settings the first few times I play. Unfortunately I haven't found that fine balance between default start and being able to survive much beyond expanding. The AI eventually hates me no matter what I try to do.and when one does, the rest follow suit like a domino effect.2.
I try to pic similar parties and intentions. I try to steer clear of the unhappy folks or those that have a higher likelihood of quitting.Initially I was all like.WOOO.every planet gets a governor. Lately I'll use 1-2 governors but most of my planets are leader-free. I really haven't noticed if that has a big negative effect on my game or not.I still struggle to develop, barely can afford a few ships for a small fleet, and by the time I think I might have a chance at both of those the AI hates me again lol.3. I try to keep a bulk of food production +1 or more. Then I focus on the BLANK research that increases income via tourism and boosts favorability by +5, then I work on population.
This strategy doesn't seem to work. Planet development takes a while, and speed varies which it should based on population and workforce. But my focus goes more towards the Social development.thinking that would make the most out of my fledgling empire.
But I think it may not be as useful until the population is bigger. Though when you have a planet or two that supposedly doubles tourism income, it is tough to ignore.4. I try to make sure I have at least a +1 surplus of food so I can expand to the next planet i see ASAP. Depending on what is near me I try to cherry pick the good ones obviously, but sometimes you just gotta expand to half decent planets before the AI takes em.I try to expand a system or two every year or two, trying to delay my pace so I'm not expanding too quickly. Sometimes if I see good system I'll colonize them months apart. But that does seem to drag things down a bit.5. Build whatever I can whenever I can.without going broke.
The balance here is that every ship that I've built and used costs 1 credit to maintain. So between paying for that and using other income for savings and more-so for infrastructure development. Frankly I haven't been able to accomplish much here yet. A few skirmishes. I really want to get into the war and combat part of this game.I just have to conquer the economy to get there.6. Frankly trying to do anything to boost more research and infrastructure initially, and then weapons and defenses later on.7.
That's how I deal with it lol! Eventually I will come out ahead!Cheers!:). Originally posted by:This is very interesting for us to read, since it gives us a good insight on how you and other players are playing the game:) How do you feel about your issues about the overall difficulty after the last update? Cheers!I had about an hour to burn last night, so instead of loading up Polaris Sector, I loaded up the freshly patched DoA.
I'm glad I did, most fun I've had yet and the furthest I've gotten without getting frustrated or annihilated by AI that hated me!:)Warning, big post ahead! I'm a wordy person.I apologize ahead of time. The adjustments you made even between the beta and official patch release are noticeable to me.I did find some bugs/glitches, and I'll get to those in a minute. First I want to say I feel that the AI are far more relaxed as-far-as aggression. Some Thoughts on Early Game and Exploration-I was able to start a new game, where the only changes I made were to make pirates rare, and uncheck the late game events (I haven't gotten to late game yet.so wanna go through it all first). So a single system start.start manually exploring with my scout. Frankly I manually explore to give me more to do than wait for my planets to level up.Exploration needs to be a little more interesting IMHO.
I like the random populated systems, space whales that want to destroy you, random mining locations, some planets that are colonizable, etc.but it all seems so sparse.which it is space so that does make some sense.but translated into gameplay means I'm not as involved.Sure this keeps the casual gaming thing going, but knowing at any time I can set my scout to auto explore, and it'll do a more effective exploration job than me means there's little reason to manually explore except for something to do. Not sure what would be worth adding here.or maybe if infrastructure/planet development needs adjusted.Colony Staffing Thoughts -Maybe you could utilize an idea for Stellaris (and the future with GC3's Crusades DLC) to have to staff your ships with captains from your population.
I like this idea and the execution of it would fit pretty nicely into DoA which is already using something similar for governors. Right now I don't feel having a board of folks I elected, nor governors on planets feels all that important.maybe it's because I'm still fairly new to the game and its mechanics.
I get the occasional notification that someone wants to quit because of another individual.and I usually say See Ya!! But in that screen where they want to leave.you don't know what their stats are.maybe you could add a hover tooltip to summarize their level and attributes?Governor Thoughts -That brings me to the next thing I noticed.so from the governor panel.I selected my board, which before this patch was also the same folks used to govern planets.

It seems now, I cannot select anyone from my board to govern a planet.only the guys that I did not select from the pool remain. Is this how its supposed to be?
I had been choosing my board with the thought that some of them would go on to govern planets.now that doesn't seem to be an option.unless I'm mistaken.but last night the guys I selected.most of which had farm development bonuses were not available to govern any of my planets.Again, maybe I mistook something.but I do know before.I could select folks I selected for my board to govern planets.so maybe that was a bug prior? This could change whom I'll select for my board obviously.:)Planet/Infrastructure Development Thoughts -Next is planet development.I did spend some of the game at normal speed, and more of it at double speed. While I feel planetary development is very similar to what it was in the beta.it might be a little slow or uninvolving in between waiting for different infrastructures to develop. Reason-being is there's not much else you can really afford to do early on.I focus on making sure I have food first so when I increase my population, they're not starving, costing me in my good standings with my colonies. I do appreciate the adjusments here so that my ratings don't drop so quickly.even in the face of a -10 disease, I was able to manage my colony on the fringe and get it back just before a rebellion occurred. WOOT!But early on.I'm deciding how long to wait in developing my planet before I expand. The AI chose that for me, I either expand early or not at all.
So I took the 2 closest options I could. Being humans on this run, every planet I could colonize had the +20% infrastructure cost perk on it. The AI is still more aggressive at colonizing and ship building.not sure how they afford it and if they're playing by the same rules or not. I also realize there's asymmetric starts so that could be part of it.and I like the thought of asymmetric starts.but there should be an option for it IMHO.I DO like that things take some time to happen like infrastructure development, building ships, colonizing, researching, scouting, surveying, mining base setups, etc.
But it just feels like something is missing early on. Some games fix this by adding surprises and more to survey, more random events, etc. Not sure what DoA should do.Economy Thoughts -I would like to see a change in the economy, I like the idea that you have a limit to what you can do.if you want to go full on planetary development, then that's what you'll afford to do.if you want to build a lotta ships then that's what you're gonna do until you run outta funds because each ship and station costs so much to maintain.

Created by, it's a collage of some of the 4X genre's greatest games: Endless Legend, Civilization, Endless Space and Galactic Civilizations. This wasn't my review. I haven't played the game yet, but I will eventually. I was just sharing it. I'm sure there are good reviews out there.
While the reviewer isn't the best out there, I've come to appreciate his honesty, and often share his frustrations in some of the titles I've played that he's reviewed. It might be helpful because it shows video of game play, and the reviewers thoughts as he plays. Some will find that more helpful than just a block of text.
I've found as technology has advanced, I expect more out of the UI's of games. Some are absolutely fabulous. Others are garbage. The reviewer seems to experience a lot of frustration with the UI, and how complicated it is to get to places that should be just a click away. From the few other comments here, it seems some share some of his frustrations, while others do not. Either way, people should always check out a number of reviews before purchasing anything these days.
